10 Reasons to See a Dietitian Today
Whether your goal is to improve your health, manage a medical condition, or fine-tune your athletic performance, consulting a Registered Dietitian (RD) can be a game-changer. In this article, I will share 10 reasons to see a Dietitian today.
First Thing First, What is a Dietitian?
“Dietitians, “translate scientific, medical, and nutrition information into practical, individualized therapeutic diets and meal plans for people.” ”
Is there a difference between a Dietitian/Nutritionist and other Nutrition Professionals?
In Alberta, there is a big difference between an RD/nutritionist and a non-regulated nutrition professional.
RDs are regulated health professionals under the Health Professions Act. They are required to complete a university degree in food and nutrition science, participate in a rigorous internship, and pass a national registration examination. This lengthy certification ensures that RDs are equipped with evidence-based medical and scientific knowledge to assess, diagnose, and treat nutrition problems.
Whereas, the title "holistic nutrition consultant" or “nutrition coach” is not protected in Alberta. This means that the educational background and qualifications of someone using these titles can vary widely. These people are not regulated by the Health Professions Act, and their practice can range from self-taught to those with formal education in non-nutrition-related fields. As a result, this is why you will only see RDs/Nutritionists in medical settings, such as hospitals and nursing homes.
In provinces other than Alberta, the term nutritionist is not protected. Be careful and ask for credentials when working with someone who states they are a nutrition professional.
You can confirm that your RD is registered in Alberta by checking this database: College of Dietitians of Alberta.

10 Reasons to See a Dietitian Today
1. Personalized Nutrition Advice
Contrary to popular belief, RDs do not just preach the Food Guide. We provide personalized nutrition advice tailored to your unique health needs, lifestyle, and goals. This tailored approach ensures that the advice you receive suits your personality, learning style, and goals, and maximizes your health benefits.
2. Manage and Prevent Chronic Diseases
Equally important, RDs are trained in medical nutrition therapy, to support chronic disease management. They can help manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and more through adjustments in food and nutrition. In addition, preventative care typically involves nutrition as the first step and can decrease the likelihood of developing these chronic conditions in the future.
3. Weight Management
Whether you aim to lose or gain weight, or simply maintain a healthy body weight, an RD can develop a plan that works for you. This plan will be sustainable and based on the most up-to-date scientific and evidence-based information, rather than the often unsustainable fads and trends that are shown in the media and online. An RD will work with you to develop a plan that is personalized and will provide you with the most likely chance of success and long-term benefits.
4. Digestive Disorders
For those suffering from conditions like IBS, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or food intolerances, navigating food choices can be challenging. For example, RDs help identify trigger foods and create a diet plan that lessens symptoms and ensures nutrition needs are met.
5. Improve Relationship with Food
RDs can provide valuable strategies to improve your relationship with food, helping you move away from restrictive thinking and towards a more balanced, healthful approach to eating. This approach to eating has the most positive and long-lasting benefits on your overall health and well-being.
6. Optimize Athletic Performance
Athletes, whether they are new to sport or professionals, require specialized diets to perform at their best and recover quickly. RDs can tailor nutrition plans to specific athletic goals, sports, and personal exercise routines.
7. Support During Pregnancy and Postpartum
Nutrition needs increase and change during pregnancy. Nutrition needs should also be a focus for those trying to conceive, as well as during the postpartum period regardless if breastfeeding or not. An RD can guide you through these changes to ensure you and your baby are getting the nutrients you need.
8. Nutrition for Aging
As we age, our nutrition needs change. RDs help older adults manage these changes to continue living a vibrant, healthy life. For example, adapting or liberalizing diets to manage chronic illnesses, improve energy levels, and maintain bone health. Another necessary component that RDs are experts at is ensuring that quality of life is a primary goal. In our more senior years, living well, along with enjoying life is top of mind.
9. Enhance Sleep Quality
Emerging research links diet to sleep quality(1). An RD can help modify your eating habits to potentially improve your sleep, suggesting ideal times to eat and which foods and nutrients to focus on.
10. Educational Resources and Tools
RDs provide valuable resources and tools that can help you implement and stick to new eating habits. This might include meal plans, recipes, grocery lists, and even apps to track your progress.
